Berthe Morisot, Young Woman Powdering her Face, 1877, oil on canvas, 46 x 39 cm, Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
Berthe Morisot is one of the most important impressionist painters. Together with Mary Cassatt and Eva Gonzalès, Morisot provided the public a female outlook on the new modern era. She exhibited at The Salon in Paris in 1864 for the first time at the age of 23. There would be 5 more shows where she participated. After this huge success Morisot exhibited her work at 7 impressionist exhibitions. She became one of the groups most esteemed members. While Morisot focused on landscapes early on in her career, she is famous for her portraits, genre and interior scenes and still lifes. Because of the strict social norms and gender restrictions at the time, she kept her subjects close to home. As a woman she was not allowed to depict certain subjects such as bars. Morisot is known for her swift brushwork, her emphasis on the color white and for leaving parts of the canvas often untouched giving the public the impression her works are unfinished. This work features a young woman making her toilette. Seated in front of a mirror at her dressing table she is holding a powder puff. Capturing young women during private moments such as bathing, dressing and undressing, combing their hair and applying powder were very popular themes among impressionist painters. They weren’t meant as moralistic genre scenes about vanity, they were meant to depict intimate moments and the rituals of daily life in a modern era.
